What a strange day in baseball. Earlier this afternoon some shocking news broke that San Francisco Giant Melky Cabrera tested positive for testosterone and will be suspended for 50 games. This means that he will not be eligible to play again until the second round of the postseason if the Giants get that far. Cabrera was second in the league in batting average and San Francisco’s biggest bat. His huge season thus far had seemed a bit fishy to me anyways. It’s too bad that there are still players who think they can get away with taking performance enhancing drugs. It tarnishes the game. For the Dodgers, it definitely will give them an extra edge in the division against their arch rivals.

On a brighter note, the Seattle Mariners finally garnered their first franchise perfect

Felix Hernandez gives the Mariners their first perfect game today.
game. Felix Hernandez was utterly dominating as he blanked the Tampa Bay Rays in the 23rd perfecto in MLB history. It was also the third perfect game of the 2012 season (Humber, Cain, Felix). Congratulations to King Felix!

The Giants had already lost to the Nationals before the Dodger game commenced, so as long as the Dodgers led by their ace could win tonight’s game, they would recapture sole possession of first place in the NL West. That is just what they did. (more…)

Clayton Kershaw was the lone Dodger who played in any of the 83rd All-Star game Tuesday evening. Matt Kemp was shown smiling from the dugout while he enjoyed the game from the sidelines. Kersh made 27 pitches in the fifth inning in the Kansas City heat. While the All-Star game is fun, it was a bit disconcerting to see Kersh laboring for that long during this exhibition game when he is scheduled to pitch Friday to begin the Dodger second half. I also found it incredibly hard to root for a team composed of Ryan Braun, a bunch of Giants, CarGo, and other rival players. Although the shutout of the AL by the NL was somewhat enjoyable.

The fifth inning was a rough one for Kershaw when the AL loaded the bases up after David Ortiz

and Mike Napoli both singled and Asdrubal Cabrera drew a two-out walk. The inning would have been over a lot sooner if it wasn’t for Bryce Harper‘s misjudgement on the ball hit by Napoli to left field. It was scored as a hit, but it looked like an error on Harper to me. Harper, the 19-year old controversial rookie from the Nationals, also committed a TOOTBLAN earlier in the game. Kershaw escaped the inning unscathed as pinch-hitter Ian Kinsler flied out. (more…)
