Dodgers Will Host the Red Sox in 2016

The Dodgers will host the Boston Red Sox August 5-7 at Dodger Stadium in 2016 according to Gordon Edes of ESPN.com. The Dodgers have played a total of 12 games versus the Red Sox in the regular season, and they are 5-7 against them.

The last time the Dodgers faced the Red Sox was August of 2013. The Dodgers only won one game in the three-game series. Interestingly Ricky Nolasco  out pitched then Red Sox pitcher John Lackey in game 1. Hyun-jin Ryu and Chris Capuano took losses in the second and third games at Dodger Stadium.

If you remember, the Dodgers blanked the Red Sox in the series opener during that magical summer of ’13. With the win the Dodgers brought their magic number down to 25 on their way to claiming the N.L. West crown. Ironically it was now Red Sox outfielder Hanley Ramirez who hit the difference maker two-run homerun in the fourth inning. Ricky Nolasco and John Lackey made for an unlikely pitching duel in the Dodger win.

The Dodgers dropped the second game of the series after Hyun-jin Ryu was annoyed by the pesky former Dodger Shane Victorino and the homerun by Jonny Gomes. Back then we had to suffer through relief appearances from the likes of Carlos Marmol and Brian Wilson.

When the Dodgers lost the finale to the Red Sox in August of 2013, that was their first series loss since June of that year! They were that good. Like I’ve said before, I really feel like the Dodgers had their best chance in 2013 to make it to the World Series, and they were so frustratingly close. That season was magical.

Chris Capuano was bad at throwing baseballs in game 3 against the Sox, and now Giant Jake Peavy got the win. The Dodgers got blown out by the Red Sox in an ugly 8-1 defeat. The lone morsel of Dodger offense came off of a Adrian Gonzalez solo homerun against his former team.

Right now the Red Sox are in last place in the A.L. East and 8 games back of the Baltimore Orioles. Since leaving the Dodgers, Hanley Ramirez has been stirring up things in Boston. Stop me if you have heard this before…the Red Sox sent Hanley back to Boston to have a MRI on his injured hand. Hanley was hit in the hand by a line drive from Xander Bogaerts and has not appeared in a game since.

Hanley began his season with Boston roaring out of the gates and hit 10 homeruns in the month of April. Hanley has hit just 5 homeruns thereafter. Hanley is signed with Boston through 2018 on a four-year $88 million deal with a 2019 vesting option. Hanley is hitting .283/.330/.482 with 15 homeruns and 38 RBI in 67 games played. He’s played mostly left field for Boston (59 games) with 6 games as the designated hitter and 1 game at third base. Hanley’s poor defense and attitude have been rumored to be a problem in Boston, and who knows what the situation will look like in Beantown next August.

While the Dodgers should be focused on this year, it is still fun to think about Adrian Gonzalez hitting homeruns against his former team in 2016.
