Dodgers Acquire Left Hander Eric Surkamp From White Sox For Blake Smith

The Dodgers have acquired left hander Eric Surkamp from the White Sox in exchange for minor league righty Blake Smith. Surkamp is 27-years old and spent the majority of his career in the Giant’s organization.

Surkamp pitched in just six major league games for the Giants before he was selected off of waivers by the White Sox on December 23, 2013. Since then he has pitched 35 big league games for Chicago during the 2014 season. In those 35 games, he posted a 2-0 record, and a 4.81 ERA/4.82 FIP. He struck out 20 and walked 13 in 24.1 innings pitched last year.

    • In 2015 For Chicago’s Charlotte Knights of the Independent League, Surkamp whiffed 30 batters and walked just 9 in 30 games. In 25.2 innings pitched, Surkamp posted a 3-0 record, and a 2.81 ERA. Over his seven year minor league career, he has a 3.09 ERA, and 10.0 strikeout per nine rate.

    As for Smith, he had pitched in eight games for the Tulsa Drillers. He posted a 1.62 ERA in 16 games. He has a career 3.89 ERA in 97 minor league games. Blake was originally drafted as an outfielder, and was converted to a pitcher. Back in 2010 Blake hit 19 home runs in 493 plate appearances for the Great Lakes Loons.

    Surkamp was drafted by the Giants in the sixth round of the 2008 amateur draft. Tim Brown first reported the deal, and Ken Gurnick reported that Blake Smith was going to the White Sox.
