Dodgers Roll Over in San Francisco Again

Did you hear the news? The Dodger hitters were unable to get into their houses tonight. Apparently somebody put home plates in from of their front doors. Ok, enough jokes for now, but someone needs to show the Dodgers what a home plate looks like, because no Dodger has touched it since last Sunday afternoon.
The Dodgers rolled over again in San Francisco, getting shut out for the second consecutive night, losing to the Giants 4-0 on Wednesday night. The Dodgers have not scored a run in their last 23 innings. The last time the Dodgers scored was the fourth inning of their 1-0 win over Colorado on Sunday at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers are now 2-6 against the Giants this season. They are now 0-5 at San Francisco, and have lost five consecutive games in the lion’s den for the first time since 2003. Things are starting to look bleak.

You can’t blame Brett Anderson for this one. The left hander pitched extremely well, throwing the game of his life. Anderson pitched 6.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits, and struck out seven. He walked three, and didn’t allow a run until the sixth inning. What a shame he had to take the loss.

The Dodgers could not hit Tim Lincecum and his creepy mustache. The former Cy Young winner allowed three hits across seven frames and struck out four. The Dodgers were only able to get five base runners through the first seven innings. The Dodgers left eight men on base and were 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position. Yet once again, they could not score.

The Giants scored one run in the sixth and three in the seventh. Buster Posey who had three hits on the night, doubled off the wall to lead off the sixth inning. Two grounders later he was at third, when backup catcher Andrew Susac drew a walk, extending the inning. Brandon Crawford’s RBI flare to left fell just in front of a diving Alex Guerrero. That scored Posey to put the Giants on the board.

In the following frame, Casey McGehee walked. One out later he advanced to second on a wild pitch from Anderson. Joe Panik’s ground ball single to center scored McGehee to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. Then Yimi Garcia was called in to relieve Anderson and immediately served up a two-run home run to Posey to put the Giants up by a score of 4-0.
The Dodgers did come close to scoring a couple of times. However almost only counts in horseshoes. The Dodgers had a runner at third with nobody out, and still couldn’t score. Yasmani Grandal doubled, and went to third on a Lincecum wild pitch.
However Andre Ethier grounded out. Juan Uribe fouled out, and after Anderson walked, the slumping Joc Pederson grounded to first. The Dodgers had one more chance to score in the top of the eighth off of Jean Machi, and Javier Lopez. Again they failed. Justin Turner singled. Pederson popped out, and Rollins lined out to left. Howie Kendrick’s line drive double inside the left field line sent Turner to third. Then the Adrian Gonzalez weak grounder ended the inning. That was it.

The Dodgers had a series back in 2012 at At&t Park where they were swept and shut out in three consecutive games. That is where we are at right now. I felt like I was watching that 2012 club with James Loney, Dioner Navarro, Jerry Sands, and all those guys. We’ve traveled back to 2012.
There is very little to be happy about right now. The offense is awful, the bullpen is ineffective, and the club announced that Hyun-jin Ryu will undergo shoulder surgery tomorrow forcing him to miss the entire season. The only positive thing I can say is that the Dodgers (24-15) are still in first place. That’s the only positive at the moment. Although they are now just 2.5 games in front of the Giants.
The Dodgers will somehow try to avoid a sweep and total embarrassment Thursday afternoon in the series finale before they return home. Once again Clayton Kershaw will battle Madison Bumgarner at 12:45 PM. Will the Dodgers ever score a run again? It’s only May.
