Dodgers Go For Three-Peat in the National League West

One more Clayton Kershaw start and the Freeway Series with the cross-town rival Angels stand in the way of the Dodgers and Opening Day 2015. Even though a majority of Dodger fans haven’t been able to watch Dodger games on their TVs for an entire season going on two, the Dodgers have been top in the National League for two seasons in a row. The Dodgers will be vying for a three-peat in the National League West. This feat hasn’t been accomplished since the Atlanta Braves were still in the division in the early 1990’s also known as “the good old days.”

The Dodgers have 13 West Division Titles:

1974, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1995, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014     

The Dodgers have finished in first place in the West in consecutive years three times, but they have never won the division crown back-to-back-to-back. Perhaps it’s not the Dodger Dynasty we have all been coveting for all these years since the last taste of the World Series back in 1988. Yet, even with Frank McCourt’s albatross contracts and lack of international spending and player development during the so-called dark ages, and even with Ned Colletti’s Andruw Jones and Andre Ethier deals, the Dodgers have been very successful during the Colletti era. 2015 marks the first time in nine years the Dodgers will be under a new General Manager who doesn’t wear snazzy cowboy boots to the ballpark.

It really wasn’t that bad under Colletti. The Dodgers won 94 games last season. They knocked on the doors of the World Series in 2013 after that magical summer winning run. They just haven’t been able to overcome the St. Louis Cardinals in order to grab that World Series berth the fans in Los Angeles deserve. With Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi’s revamped roster, it will be interesting to see if this Dodger team can not only repeat the success of the past two teams in claiming the top spot in the West but also have the roster depth and flexibility in order to go all the way.   

The Dodgers are the favorites to win the N.L. West, and they have had an offensively big Spring. The pitching staff has sustained some injuries, and the health of the pitching staff especially closer Kenley Jansen, will have a big impact on the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers still have a talented group of arms in their system, but then you look over at Washington’s rotation and get a little nervous.

The Padres may be a little more difficult to beat this season with their Kempified outfield. The Rockies, well they are still the Rockies. Just don’t start Carlos Frias in Coors Field again, Don. The D-backs are more dangerous as far as hit batters than actual hits. It looks as though the N.L. West division title for 2015 is the Dodgers to lose. Three consecutive titles would be very impressive. With it being an odd year, the Giants may not make another one of their infamous October runs.

Defeating the Red Birds, well that’s another story.
