Hyun-jin Ryu Shut Down For Three Days Due To Shoulder Inflammation

The Dodgers have just released a statement that right hander Hyun-jin Ryu has been shut down for a few days due to shoulder inflammation/tightness. During his last start on Tuesday afternoon Ryu reported feeling tightness in his shoulder. The Dodgers have given him an inflammation reducing injection and intend on shutting him down for a few days until they decide what to do with him. However his availability for opening week remains questionable.
On Wednesday, LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu reported feeling tightness in his left shoulder, similar to the discomfort he experienced last season. (1/2)

Ryu has had a history of shoulder problems dating back to last season when he missed nearly three weeks because of it. This appears to be the same type of discomfort that he felt last season. Ryu has had other setbacks this spring as well, which included back spasms during the first week of exhibition play.

Apparently Ryu did not receive an MRI, and will just rest the ailing shoulder, and the Dodgers will reevaluate him from there. J.P. Hoornstra tweeted that Ryu believes that the injury is not as serious as the one last season, and that he should be ready for opening week. However Bill Shaikin thinks that the Dodgers could begin the regular season with Ryu heading to the disabled list.
If that were to happen, the Dodgers would have to have somebody step up to fill his slot. However the options are less than stellar. Joe Wieland is a possibility, as are guys like Carlos Frias, Mike Bolsinger, and possibly even Adam Liberatore, or rookie Zach Lee. Ryu’s spot in the rotation will not need to be filled until April 14.
Ryu has pitched in two games this spring, making three starts. He’s thrown five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, with one walk, and four strikeouts. Last season Ryu finished with a 14-7 record, making 26 starts, and pitching in 152 innings. In 2013, Ryu’s first season with the Dodgers, he made 30 starts, and threw 192 frames.
