Dodgers Double Up On Split Squad Day

The Dodgers had some split squad action going on Friday afternoon in their Cactus league schedule. The club had a game at home against the Mariners, and another game against the Brewers at Maryvale park. It was double the Dodgers double your pleasure on Friday. The double squad day definitely went in the Dodger’s favor as the boys in blue won both of their games for an afternoon sweep. The Dodgers beat Seattle 7-4, and the road crew dusted off the Brewers by a 10-1 score.

In the home game, David Huff took the mound against Mariner’s right handed youngster Erasmo Ramirez. Huff looked pretty solid throwing two frames, and allowing just one hit and whiffing two. He was followed by Dustin McGowan, David Aardsma, J.P. Howell, rookie Chris Anderson, Paco Rodriguez, and flamethrower Pedro Baez. McGowan and Howell both looked shaky, each allowing two runs apiece. The rest of the guys were just fine.
New Dodgers Yasmani Grandal, Jimmy Rollins, and Howie Kendrick all collected a hit each. Cuban infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Remember Arruebarrena cleared waivers and is now not on the 40-man roster anymore.
The Dodgers grabbed the lead early by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Kendrick doubled, and Ethier’s infield tapper towards the mound eluded the Seattle defense allowing Kendrick to go to third. Juan Uribe’s fielder’s choice scored the first run, and Austin Barne’s sacrifice fly brought in the second run. Barnes was catching because Grandal fouled a ball off of his foot in practice earlier. He’s ok, but the Dodgers penciled him in as the DH.
The Mariners tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third. Willie Bloomquist singled, and then scored on Chris Taylor’s run scoring triple. Jesus Sucre’s sacrifice fly tied the score.

The Mariners took the lead 4-2 in the top of the fifth. Bloomquist singled again, and pinch-runner Shawn O’Malley stole second and third before coming home on Taylor’s two-run home run. The Dodgers got a run back in the bottom half of the fifth on a Shawn Zarraga walk, Arruebarrena single, and a wild pitch. Zarraga would feature prominently in the Dodger scoring later on.
Later on would be the Dodger’s sixth inning which saw them plate three runs to take a 6-4 lead. Grandal singled, and after a force out, Matt Carson walked. There was a Paul Hoenecke fielder’s choice to score one of the runs. Then after a fielding error by shortstop Ketel Marte, the Dodgers got consecutive RBI singles from Zarraga and Arruebarrena. The Dodgers would add one more run in the bottom of the seventh on O’Kyea Dickson’s solo home run. That’s Dickson’s second blast of the spring. The Dodgers would go onto win by a score of 7-4.
Yasiel Puig, A.J. Ellis, and Joc Pederson joined Julio Urias, Zach Lee, and the rest of the Dodgers on the road in Maryvalle to take on the Brewers. Zach Lee pitched two scoreless frames, allowing no hits or runs, walking one and striking out one.
Urias pitched an inning and two thirds. The phenom didn’t allow a hit or a run either, but walked three to go along with his two punch outs. The club actually had a no-hitter going until former Dodger Elian Herrera broke it up. Both clubs took advantage of three errors by the opposing club in each game.
Yimi Garcia pitched an inning and a third, and Chris Reed allowed one run on two hits in two innings.

As for the offense, it was a red letter day. Or should I say a blue letter day. The club exploded for ten runs on sixteen hits. A.J. Ellis hit a three-run home run. Joc Pederson continued his hot hitting by going 2 for 3 with a single, double, RBI and two runs scored. Darnell Sweeney, Scott Schebler, and Alex Guerrero each had two hits. Puig went 1 for 1 with two walks. Corey Seager went 0 for 2 with a walk. There were also homers in the game from Guerrero, and Sweeney. Scott Van Slyke also got in on the fun with an RBI single. The Dodgers are now 3-1 in Cactus league play, after those two wins.
The Dodgers also got good news on Zack Greinke’s elbow. Apparently the feathered right hander felt fine after throwing a live batting practice session. Greinke threw 36 pitches and faced ten minor league hitters. The club says he is on track to start Wednesday against the Cubs. Not before he throws one more bullpen session of course.
The Dodger’s Cactus league slosh continues tomorrow. The club will face the Indians from Goodyear ball park at 12:05 PM.
