Pedro Guerrero Hospitalized

Former Dodger Pedro Guerrero was hospitalized over the weekend with bleeding in his brain according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. The 58- year old infielder was hospitalized in the Dominican Republic, but he has reportedly been able to eat and is improving.

Guerrero’s wife, Roxana, took him to the hospital in Santo Domingo on Sunday after he lost mobility in his left arm. He was placed in the intensive care unit out of precaution. Guerrero has since recovered mobility in his arm.

Guerrero was at Dodger Stadium to take part in the 2013 old-timers game, and he has been a hitting coach in the Dominican Republic as well as a manager in Mexico recently.

The Dodgers acquired Guerrero on April 3, 1974 in a trade with the Cleveland Indians which involved Bruce Ellingsen. Ellingsen, the minor league southpaw, only ended up pitching in 16 major league games. What a fabulous trade that was for the Dodgers.

The great Guerrero played for the Dodgers for 11 seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in August of 1988 in exchange for John Tudor. Guerrero finished his 15-year major league career in St. Louis.

Guerrero was the co-MVP of the 1981 World Series along with teammates Ron Cey and Steve Yeager after the Dodgers defeated the postseason rival Yankees. He hit .333 with 2 homeruns and 7 RBIs during the 1981 World Series. Guerrero was a five-time All-star, and he had a career batting average of .300 with 215 homeruns and 898 RBIs.

Guerrero is being treated by a neurosurgeon, and we wish him the best in his recovery.
