Yoan Moncada Cleared To Sign Soon, Dodgers Considered Favorites

It looks like the newest Cuban sensation, infielder Yoan Moncada is free to sign with an MLB club soon. And wouldn’t you know, the Dodgers are one of the top suitors for the youngster’s services. Apparently MLB modified their standards for incoming players from Cuba, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo sports.

    • The MLB does not need a specific license from the OFAC, and will now accept a general license. MLB will also need a sworn statement that the player does not reside in Cuba and has no desire to return. There are a few other prospects awaiting clearance from Major League Baseball. Now MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez is reporting that Moncada should be signing with a club soon. But reportedly has workouts scheduled with teams throughout the middle of February. There are nine clubs that Moncada has had workouts with, and the Dodgers are one of those nine. The other eight clubs include the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, Rangers, Rays, Tigers, and Brewers, and Padres.

    Buster Olney thinks that the Dodgers are the clear favorites to sign the 19-year old phenom. Imagine if the Dodgers do sign Moncada. He could be the next Yasiel Puig. Just think about the Dodgers having not one, but two Puigs’ in their lineup this season. Excuse me while I mop up some of my drool.

    However if the Dodgers do ink Moncada, it does not come without a downside. Moncada does not qualify for exemption from the international pool system. That means that the Dodgers would be forced to pay a 100 percent penalty tax on the amount it goes over the pool allotment. Although we all know the Dodgers have the funds to handle that sort of financial commitment.
