Clayton Kershaw (and Trout) Named LA Sports Council’s Sportsmen of The Year

To no one’s surprise, Dodger ace Clayton Kershaw has been named the Los Angeles Sports Council’s 2014 sportsmen of the year alongside Angel’s superman Mike Trout. Of course we care not for Trout.

Both players won the Most Valuable player awards in their respective leagues in 2014, while Kershaw also won the National League Cy Young award, his third time winning the prestigious award. Both players will be honored during the tenth annual Los Angeles Sports awards on March 15 at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

The Los Angeles sports awards are annually presented to the greatest players in sports. They also recognize the best moments in sports during the year, in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. You will get to see the dinner gala live, which will be televised by the Dodger’s old television station Prime Ticket, also known as Fox Sports West. The time of the gala has not yet been announced.

Kershaw had one of the most spectacularly incredible seasons of any left handed pitcher in recent years. He became just the second Dodger ever to win three Cy Young awards. The only other lefty to do that in a Dodger uniform was the great Sandy Koufax. Kershaw’s season was most Koufaxian as he led the majors in ERA for the fourth consecutive season.

Kershaw finished with a 21-3 record, 1.77 ERA, and 239 whiffs in 27 starts. Despite missing a month of the season because of a strained teres muscle in his shoulder, the left hander still tossed 198 innings and walked just 31 while posting a 10.8 strikeout per nine rate, and 1.4 walk per nine rate.

Kershaw also led the league in highest strikeout per nine rate, lowest WHIP, FIP, ERA+, complete games, and strikeout to walk ratio.

And so Kershaw was honored for his utter domination against all opponents in 2014 with a unanimous Cy Young vote. This was the first time a Dodger had won the NL MVP award since Kirk Gibson’s historic 1988 campaign.
