Dodgers Designate Brian Wilson For Assignment

The Dodgers have announced they have designated reliever Brian Wilson for assignment. The move clears roster space for newly signed right hander Brandon McCarthy, whose deal was finalized this afternoon.

Wilson of course was quite atrocious last year for the Dodgers, primarily pitching as a set-up man, before he was demoted to just middle relief. He was horrendous in whatever role he was in last season. Wilson was signed by the Dodgers as a free agent on July 30, 2013. He had just recovered from his second Tommy John surgery. During his short stint with the Dodgers in 2013, he pitched very well. That year he posted a 0.66 ERA, and 2.02 FIP in 18 games pitched. He allowed just one earned run, while whiffing 13, and allowed only eight hits.

That proved to be a small sample size for the right hander, as he returned in 2014 to be one of the main bums in a Dodger bumpen that blew many games last year. In 2014, Wilson posted a 4.66 ERA, and 4.29 FIP in 48.1 innings pitched. He was 2-4 with 54 whiffs, and 29 walked allowed. Last season he had a 5.4 walks per nine rate, and a 10.3 strikeout per nine rate, to go along with a 1.6 WHIP. By comparison, he had a 0.878 WHIP in 2013, and a 2.6 walk per nine rate.

Wilson allowed more hits per innings pitched in 2014, and recorded just one save. All total, Wilson was 4-5 in 79 games pitched for the Dodgers between 2013-2014.

Wilson was due to make 9.5 million dollars in 2015, in what was his final year of his contract.

The Dodger brain trust is once again showing that they are remolding the Dodger roster into their own unique vision. This also clears room in the bullpen for the Dodgers to acquire better relievers. Look out Brandon League, you’re next on the chopping block.
