Dodgers Sign Darwin Barney, Avoid Arbitration

The Dodgers have reached agreement with infielder Darwin Barney avoiding arbitration. The reported deal is worth 2.52 million dollars for one year. The club announced on Tuesday evening.

The Dodgers acquired Barney from the Cubs in a waiver trade on July 30th of this season. Barney played in 22 games for the Dodgers and 72 games for the Cubs in 2014. He batted .303 (10 for 33) with one home run and seven runs batted for the Dodgers, and batted .237 overall with three home runs in 262 plate appearances.

Barney played 12 games at second base, and two games at shortstop for the Dodgers in 2014, and 67 games at second base for the Cubs. The 29-year old is well known for his solid defense, and played well for the Dodgers in the final two months of the season. Defensive metrics ranked him as one of the better defensive infielders in the National League.

Barney, a right handed hitter is a former gold glove award winner. He has a career slash line of .246/.394./336 with 19 major league home runs.

The Dodgers also tendered contracts to the rest of their arbitration eligible players, according to the report.
