Dodgers Trade For Juan Nicasio For Unknown Reasons

The Dodger’s new brain trust is making some blistering moves guys. They allowed Hanley to sign with the Red Sox, and then trade for Juan Nicasio in the same day. We go from losing Hanley to gaining Nicasio. This offseason is not going real well for us.

    • The Dodgers have announced on Monday that they have acquired right handed starting pitcher Juan Nicasio for unknown reasons. If you remember Nicasio is the guy that got hit in the neck with a line drive. He had to have bolts inserted into his neck like Frankenstein just to be able to walk again, and he came back to pitch once he recovered from his injury. Then he beat the Dodgers a bunch of times not surprisingly. But don’t let that fool you into thinking he’s got great stuff.

    The Dodgers picked him up on Monday, acquiring him from the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later, and or cash considerations. The 28-year old Dominican pitcher signed as an amateur free agent with the Rockies back in 2006. He’s pitched four seasons in Colorado from 2011-2014.

    In those four seasons he has never won more than nine games as a starter in a season. In 2014 Nicasio posted a 6-6 record with a 5.38 ERA in  33 games pitched. He made 14 starts last season and posted a 6.1 strikeout per nine rate, and a 3.0 walk per nine rate in 93.2 innings pitched. Overall last season he whiffed 63 and walked 31 while allowing 10.3 hits per nine innings.

    I guess maybe the Dodgers feel that Nicasio would do better getting away from Coors Field. He does have a good strong mid 90’s fastball. We know he can throw hard, and he has a fairly impressive curveball. He’s no Clayton Kershaw of course, but I guess the Dodgers feel he can compete for a starting spot in spring training.

    He did pitch well for Colorado in a relief role, once they moved him into the bullpen. Overall Nicasio has a 21-22 record with a 5.03 ERA in 88 career MLB games pitched. He has posted a career FIP of 4.39, and a 6.9 strikeout per nine career mark in four MLB seasons. Nicasio was 3-3 with a 4.10 ERA in 11 games against the Dodgers. He posted a 3.63 ERA and a 2-2 record at Dodger Stadium in seven career games pitched there.

    In order to clear room for Nicasio on the Dodger’s 40-man roster, the club has designated infielder Ryan Jackson for assignment.
