The Veteran Right Hander May Retire If Traded Outside of Southern California

Dodger’s right hander Dan Haren exercised his ten million dollar player option for 2015 so he could stay with the Dodgers. The idea was the veteran wanted to be close to his family while being able to pitch for his home town club. Now it appears Haren may end up retiring at a young age if the Dodgers trade him outside of Southern California. At least that’s what the veteran is thinking about.
The Dodgers signed the veteran right hander for ten million dollars last winter to be the Dodger’s fourth starter in an already multi-talented rotation. The veteran’s ten million dollar option for 2015 vested after he threw over 180 innings this season. Haren ended up throwing 186 frames.
Haren had an up and down year with the Dodgers, finishing with a 13-11 record. Haren posted a 4.02 ERA, and a 4.09 FIP while whiffing 145 in 186 innings. In 32 starts he walked just 36, but allowed 8.9 hits per nine, and struck out 7.0 per nine. Haren’s kryptonite was the long ball. The veteran gave up 27 of those during the 2014 season.

Jon Heyman is reporting that the Dodgers may actually be shopping him. That seems somewhat strange as the Dodgers have little to no starting pitching depth. Rookies Carlos Frias, and Zach Lee might be options. Another veteran starter Chad Billingsley had his option declined, making him a free agent. Goggled spot starter Stephen Fife is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, (as is Billingsley), and the Dodgers don’t have anyone else. Roberto Hernandez, and Kevin Correia are both free agents, and horrendous and not expected to be back with the Dodgers next year.
Heyman also reports that Haren may not accept a trade and could possibly even retire if the Dodgers decide to trade him. Haren is a socal native from Monterey Park. Haren attended Pepperdine University, and went to Bishop Amat High School in La Puenta, California.
Those reports match up with reports from last year that stated that Haren was unhappy when pitching for Washington because he was so far away from his family. Haren pitched just one season in Washington before leaving via free agency in 2013. He signed with the Dodgers namely to be close to his family.
The 34-year old veteran might not accept any trade outside of Socal unless it’s to the Angels. Haren pitched for the Angels from 2010-2012. The former All-star is 142-122 lifetime with a 3.77 ERA in 359 career games.
