Hernandez, Wilson Ruin Gonzalez’s Big Day, Made Dodgers Lose To Cubs

Al Bundy says it best doesn’t he? Maybe Wilson can have a nice career as a shoe salesman because this pitching thing is about over for him. Brian Wilson, Roberto Hernandez and the rest of the Bum pitching staff snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the third game of the four game series at Wrigley Field against the Cubs on Saturday afternoon. The Dodgers blew a 7-2 lead by allowing six runs in the final two innings to lose 8-7 to the last place Cubs.

Brian Wilson who should be immediately fired, gave up four runs in the bottom of the eighth including the two-run home run to Chris Coghlan that won the game for the Cubs. Don’t tell me you didn’t see that coming the moment you saw that ugly beard trot out to the mound in the eighth inning. It was quite a pathetic sight. Hey at least we know the Dodgers are in the playoffs though right? Silver linings I guess. *Shoutout to dgdodgersfan for the image*

Speaking of pathetic, the fox announcers were idiotic. I think I actually heard them use the term “win now culture” when speaking about the Cubs. They gushed on and on about how the Cubs were just one or two players away from a World Series. Get the hell out of here Fox. Here’s to hoping that’s the last game on Fox until the Dodgers make the World Series.

Once again Roberto Hernandez could not make it past the fourth inning because he is awful. Hernandez allowed two earned runs on six hits while whiffing four and walking two. Mattingly had to hook him after he allowed the first two batters to reach in the bottom of the fifth inning, after making 88 pitches. Paco Rodriguez, a real live major league quality pitcher, was able to escape that inning by whiffing Anthony Rizzo, and getting help from an incredible catch/double play from Yasiel Puig.

The Dodger offense did what they could by scoring seven runs on eleven hits, including two home runs from Adrian Gonzalez. But it was not enough to lift a tired pitching staff. Isn’t this a switch? Chicago starter Felix Doubront was even worse than Hernandez, if that can even be possible.

Doubront allowed six earned runs on six hits over just 2.1 innings. He walked three and whiffed two and had to be lifted in the top of the third inning. But he didn’t get the loss because 32 years ago Brian Wilson was born.

The Dodgers scored twice in the top of the first. Puig bunted for a single, and then Gonzalez hit the first of his two home runs. The Dodgers were up 2-0. Hernandez continued his horrible pitching by allowing a lead-off home run to Coghlan in the bottom of the first to make it a 2-1 score.

The Dodgers batted around and scored four runs in the top of the third frame. Dee Gordon singled, Puig walked, and Gonzalez hit his second home run which put the Dodgers up 6-1. It looked like it was going to be a fun day at Wrigley Field. Unfortunately Brian Wilson still wears a Dodger uniform.

The Cubs got a run in the fourth inning with Hernandez still on the mound. Luis Valbuena doubled, and after Alcantara whiffed, Logan Watkins doubled off the ivy to score Valbuena to make it a 6-2 lead. It only gets worse from here.

Here’s Puig’s incredible catch in the bottom of the fifth. it’s one of his best. That helped the Dodgers get out of the inning and keep the lead at 6-2. He was a bit banged up but he stayed in the game and doubled in his next at-bat.

Maybe if Gordon hadn’t got thrown out trying to steal in the sixth, then he may have scored on Puig’s double. Nope. The Dodgers got a run in the seventh and then ran themselves out of the inning. Kemp walked. Hanley flied to right. Justin Turner singled him to third. Scott Van Slyke’s sacrifice fly scored Kemp, but Turner got tagged out in between first and second. The score was 7-2 Dodgers at that point.

In the seventh inning, J.P. Howell had a bad outing. He walked Coghlan, and then after Javier Baez’s swinging bunt ground out, the wild pitch moved Coghlan over to third. Then Rizzo singles in Coghlan, and pinch-hitter Mike Olt singled Rizzo to second.

After Valbuena flied out to right, Arismendy Alcantara hit a three-run home run to make the score 7-6 Dodgers. Bran don League of all people had to come in and get Chris Valaika to ground out just to get out of the inning.

After the Dodgers rolled over in the top of the eighth inning, in comes the bearded bum to blow another important game for the Dodgers. Wilson allowed a single to John Baker. Matt Szczur bunted into a force out at second. Then Coghlan hits his second home run of the game. That was a no doubter and it gives the Cubs an 8-7 lead.

Wilson couldn’t even get out of the inning he is so bad. Baez popped out. But then Rizzo was hit by a pitch, and Junior Lake singled. The Dodgers had to bring in Carlos Frias to strike out Luis Valbuena.

Chicago closer Hector Rondon retired the Dodgers in order in the top of the ninth to end the game. Puig grounded out. Gonzalez flied out to left, and Kemp whiffed. The Dodgers lose 8-7.

The Dodgers could not retire Coghlan the entire game. He went 4 for 4 with two home runs, three runs batted in, and three runs scored.

Gordon, Puig, Gonzalez, and Van Slyke all had two hits each, Gonzalez hit his 24 and 25 home runs of the season, and now has 111 RBI to lead the National League. Unfortunately it was in a losing cause.

The Dodgers have announced that Dan Haren will indeed start on Monday night against the Giants. So hilariously the Dodgers are forced to use a bullpen game on Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Jamey Wright, who did not appear on Saturday will start the game. What a joke.

The Dodgers are now 88-67 and their magic number remains six to win the NL West. The Dodgers have a three game lead at the moment. The Dodgers will await the result of the Giants game later tonight. The Giants will play San Diego at Petco Park at 5:40 PM. If the Giants win the lead will be cut back to 2.5 games. Yusmeiro Petit will counter Andrew Cashner in that one.

Wright will counter Chicago right hander Jacob Turner Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM in the Dodger’s final road game of the season.
