Dodgers Select Contract of Roger Bernadina

Back in July the Dodgers signed outfielder Roger Bernadina to a minor league contract. They’ve kept him stashed away in the minors since then. Bernadina is a left handed hitting outfielder from Curacao. He’s 30 years old and has had MLB experience with the Nationals, Phillies, and Reds.

This season he was with the Reds before the Dodgers picked him up. The Dodgers have decided to select his contract, and he will be on the bench for the rest of the season. However I don’t believe he would be eligible for a postseason roster spot.

Bernadina is not much of a hitter. He was batting .153 (9 for 59) this season for the Reds in 71 plate appearances. He played in 44 games for the Reds, and can play all three outfield positions.

Bernadina has spent seven years in the majors, and has a career .236 average with 27 home runs, and an OBP of .306. Bernadina has some speed and could be utilized as a pinch-runner. He stole 16 bases for Washington in 2010, 17 in 2011, and 15 in 2012. He has 59 career stolen bases in the majors.

Bernadina is a decent outfielder who can play all three outfield positions, although he is better at the corners. He has a career +10 rating in left field, and a +5 defensive rating in right field. The Dodgers now have 34 players on their active roster.
