Ricky Nolasco-11-9 vs. Jhoulys Chacin-13-7

Well yesterday was the most Coors Fieldiesh game ever played. The Dodgers won the first game of the three game series over the Rockies at Coors Field. The Dodgers out Coors Field’d Colorado by winning the typical 10-8 game. The Dodgers made a couple of mistakes on the base paths, and Clayton Kershaw had a rare bad game, but the Dodgers still won anyways. Given Kershaw’s horrible runs support he’s gotten this year, I say he’s due for an off-day where he gets the win. Evens things out to me. Kershaw’s four whiffs last night did give him 201 on the season. Which means he becomes the third Dodger pitcher ever to record 200+ strikeouts in a season four years in a row.

These Coors Field series’ are a nightmare for everyone. They are a nightmare for the Dodgers to play, and a nightmare for us to cover. The games are brutally long, and the Dodgers always end up burning up their entire pitching staff, and losing players to injury. Case in point, last night Yasiel Puig. The rookie phenom strained his right knee while running the bases in the sixth inning and was removed from the game. He actually injured it while lunging back to the first base bag on a pick-off attempt. According to Mattingly its been bothering him for the last week. That’s kind of disconcerting, and I’m not sure where he originally injured it.

Nolasco has been on a roll-Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

From what I read Puig received treatment for his knee and did not need any tests. It’s not serious, and he’s listed as day-to-day. Apparently Puig was scheduled for a day off on Tuesday anyways, or so Mattingly says. Either way, he probably won’t be in the lineup today and could be questionable for Wednesday’s match. Although I would be surprised if he’s not back in the lineup on Wednesday.

In the second game, the hottest Dodger pitcher right hander Ricky Nolasco wil duel Colorado de facto ace Jhoulys Chacin. Nolasco has been on quite the roll of late and I don’t mean of the dinner variety. Nolasco has thrown back to back eight inning shutouts, and is 6-1 with a 2.20 ERA in ten starts for the Dodgers. Overall he is 119 with  3.26 ERA, and 140 whiffs. Ricky really turned it up in August and is hoping that September brings the similar success. Nolasco was 5-0 in August with a 1.64 ERA. We’ll see how hot Nolasco is, because only three Dodger pitchers have ever pitched a shutout in Coors Field, and one of them was Kershaw, and the other was Hideo Nomo’s no-hitter. You’ve got your work cut out for you tonight Ricky, good luck.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Nolasco has alright numbers against the Rockies, but has struggled at Coors Field. Join the club Ricky. He is 6-3 with a 4.82 ERA versus Colorado, but at Coors Field he has a 3-2 record, and 5.45 ERA in five starts at the horrific ball park. He does have about a whiff per inning against Colorado, if that makes you feel any better. Yeah it probably didn’t. Nolasco lost in his lone start versus Colorado this year back on July 14 at Coors Field. In that outing he gave up three earned runs on eight hits in five innings. But whatever you do, don’t look at the numbers below, because then you’ll see that Colorado is hitting .355 against Nolasco.

Colorado will counter with Jhoulys Chacin. The 25 year old is having a fine season. The right hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his last outing against the Giants. Chacin is 13-7 with a 3.08 ERA in 26 starts. He’s been very consistent and is 4-2 with a 1.91 ERA in the month of August.  He is 8-3 with a 3.71 ERA at Coors Field. The Dodgers have faced him a lot over he last few seasons. This year he’s faced the Dodgers three times and beaten them twice with a no-decision. Although on June 1st, the Dodgers tagged him for five runs on nine hits in six innings. Overall versus the Dodgers, Chacin is 8-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 15 games. The Dodgers have done some extensive damage versus Chacin. Check out the numbers below.

Can the Dodgers get through these next two games without anybody else getting hurt? Please just let them get out of Coors Field alive. That’s all I ask. Thank god they have such a huge lead in the division. The Dodgers with the win yesterday have now won five in a row, and are a season high 27 games above .500 at 82-55. The club has a 12.5 game lead over Arizona in the NL West, and the magic number to clinch the division is now at 14. The biggest concern now should be preparing for the playoffs. Everyone is going to need their rest.

Time Warner cable and CBS finally reached an agreement to their ridiculous stalemate, restoring CBS and KCAL 9 to all subscribers. Everyone should be able to view the Dodger game tonight at 5:40 PM on KCAL .

Minor Notes.

Andre Ethier is heating up. On the heels of his 3 for 4 game last night, the outfielder hit .312 (29 for 93) in July with an .853 OPS, and then followed that up by hitting .318 (27 for 85) in August with a .932 OPS. Ethier has 10 hits in his last 27 at-bats.

Michael Young made his Dodger debut last night as a pinch-hitter and struck out on three pitches. He is expected to make his first start at third base in this series. Young has hit .307 (7 for 23) in 25 plate appearances at Coors Field.

The Dodgers will record their 40 win on the road if victorious. Meanwhile Colorado is 40-30 at home in 2013.
