Dodgers Win For Vin To Earn Bronx Split Behind Capuano, Puig Power

There was no way the Dodgers could lose with Vin Scully doing his first ever Twittercast right? After all, Vin felt like he was bringing good luck to the Boys in Blue….

So could the Dodgers come through for Vin in the second game of a rare day/night double header at Yankee Stadium?

The Dodgers played two games at Yankee Stadium today, giving us nearly seven hours of Dodger Baseball crammed into one day. The morning game saw the error filled Dodgers make four bumbling errors, two by Schumaker and Ronald Belisario each, which handed them a 6-4 defeat.

The second game was much much more palatable for us Dodger fans to stomach. Veteran lefty Chris Capuano returned from the disabled list to toss six scoreless frames, and the Dodgers offense came through with a balanced attack of six runs on 12 hits. Five Dodgers had two hits each , and five different Dodgers knocked in one run each, Yasiel Puig had a bunt single, a solo home run, a stolen base, and scored three runs. Hanley Ramirez had two RBI singles, and Adrian Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with a run scoring double.

The Dodgers scored two runs off of Phil Hughes in the top of the first with RBI singles from Gonzalez, and Hanley. They got an RBI double from Andre Ethier in the third, and scored two more in the top of the fifth on Hanley’s second RBI single, and a sac fly from Hairston. Puig’s fifth home run was in the top of the seventh, and went to the opposite field, which put the Dodgers up 6-0.

That’s pretty much how it went in the second game. It was all Dodgers the entire game. Capuano whiffed four and allowed just three hits to pick up his second win of the season. The Dodgers earned a spit with a 6-0 win.

Even cooler was Vin scully’s twittercast during the game. Vin Scully took over the Dodger’s twitter account tonight and was tweeting throughout the game. Here’s my call of game two of the twin bill……

 Phil Hughes runs into trouble early in the top of the first. Skip Schumaker leads off with a single to left. Yasiel Puig follows with a perfectly placed bunt single up the third base line. With first and second, Adrian Gonzalez’s RBI bloop into right scores Schumaker, to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Hanley Ramirez also singles through the hole at first to score the second run (Puig), and the Dodgers lead 2-0. Andre Ethier flies out to left for the first out. Hairston’s infield single loads the bases because Gonzo is slow as molasses. Tim Federowicz grounds into an inning ending double play, but the Dodgers lead 2-0.

Chris Capuano’s first inning is of relative ease. An honest to goodness 123 frame. He whiffs Brett Gardner. Jayson Nix flies out to center, and Robinson Cano grounds out.

Hughes returns the favor with a scoreless top of the second. A Luis Cruz  pop fly. A Mark Ellis fly ball preceded a Schumaker single. Hughes whiffs the mighty Puig, and we move onto the bottom half of the second.

Cappy hurls another 123 frame in the bottom of the second, and we move into the third inning. The Dodgers tack on another run in the third frame. Gonzo leads off with a double, and moves to third on Hanley’s deep fly to center. Ethier’s double to right scores Gonzo, and puts the Dodgers up 3-0.

The Yankees threaten in the bottom of the fourth. But get Dre’d. Hanley is unable to handle Jayson Nix’s infield single. Robinson Cano follows with a base hit to the gap in right center, but Ethier makes a great throw to throw out Cano at second. Vernon Well’s fly ball to Dre is too shallow to score the runner from third. Thomas Neal flies out to Dre as well for the third out, and the Dodgers preserve the shutout.

The Dodgers plate two more runs off of Hughes in the top of the fifth. Puig is hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. He is ok and trots down to first. With Gonzo at the plate, Puig steals second. Puig advances to third on Gonzo’s grounder. With the infield playing up, Hanley’s single into left scores Puig to put the Dodgers up 4-0. Ethier singles Hanley to third, and Hairston’s sacrifice fly scores Hanley to give the Dodgers a 5-0 lead.

That impressed Vin…

Capuano continues to cruise, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the fifth. A whiff of Lyle Overbay ends that frame. Cappy blows through the sixth inning as well with another 123 frame. That inning features whiffs of Romine, and Gardner.

The Yankees make a pitching change and take out Phil Hughes in the top of the seventh. He is replaced with Adam Warren.  Yasiel Puig greets him with an opposite field lead-off home run over the short porch in right field. That’s number five on the year for Puig, and makes it a 6-0 Dodger lead.

Vinny can’t believe it!

The Dodgers remove Capuano after six innings and 84 pitches. Seems risky to me, but they do it anyways. Rookie Chris Withrow is brought in to pitch the bottom of the seventh. The rookie does his job and tosses a scoreless frame. Warren remains in the game and retires the Dodgers in the top of the eighth, and Withrow does the same to the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth. We move to the bottom of the ninth with the Dodgers still leading 6-0. In comes Brandon League in a low leverage situation. He can’t possibly blow this right? Right?!?!

Zoilo Almonte grounds out. Gardner grounds out for the second out. But League then plunks Jayson Nix with a pitch. Cano pops up for the final out, and the Dodgers win 6-0!

Capuano was great, Puig is remarkable, Hanley, Gonzo, and Ethier were good. But Vin is amazing! Legendary! The Dodgers come out of the Bronx with a 30-40 record, and now will immediately board a plane to San Diego for a four game series.
