The Dodger Stadium Contingency Nightmare

There is an outside chance that the upgrades being made to Dodger Stadium may not be finished in time for Opening Day of 2013. According to an article from Evan Bladh of ThinkBluela.com, it could be a lot closer to happening then you may think.

Dodger’s president Stan Kasten has said that the construction should be finished in time for opening day, but if not, then contingency plans would be in place. Ummmmm, what contingency plans? Evan Bladh brings up the idea of playing in the L.A. Coliseum if there is an emergency. You would think that the better idea would be to play the games in Anaheim at Angels Stadium until Dodger Stadium is ready. However the response on twitter seems to think that the Coliseum is where the team brass would choose to move the games too.

Bladh laments the idea, and says moving those games to Anaheim would be a better choice. I whole-heartily agree with him. Remember the Dodgers used to play in the Coliseum before Dodger Stadium was built, from 1958-1961, and then the Dodgers played an exhibition game there in 2008. Evan called the 2008 exhibition game a total disaster. I agree, but it’s the coliseum that is the real disaster. Read Evan’s article, as he describes the horrors that are the L.A. Coliseum. Although it might not be all bad, considering Matt Kemp could hit like 75 home runs there. Still, it’s horrendous.

The Dodgers have two spring training games against the Angels at Dodger Stadium, (the freeway series)and opening day against the Giants is on April first. (The game will be televised on ESPN at 1PM).

Thinking about having to move the first few home games of the season to Anaheim, or good god help us, the coliseum, is really scary. It would be an unimaginable tale of dread. As Bladh goes on to detail, the Coliseum is a pit. There’s no parking, modern bathrooms, and if you’ve ever seen the Coliseum you know that it is not meant for Baseball. Not to mention it’s a lot farther to drive for me then Dodger Stadium. Plus the area around the Coliseum is like a demilitarized ghetto.

Let’s just hope they finish the construction in time, and we don’t have to worry about this. What do you think? Do you think Dodger Stadium will be ready in time for Opening Day? Because otherwise, the alternative would be a nightmare unlike anything I can ever imagine. Or maybe I can, but I just don’t want to.
