Chris Capuano-3-0 vs. Chris Volstad

Since Magic Johnson and the GBM took over the Dodgers, they have lost two in a row and three of their last four on the road. The Dodgers will try and stop the slide by giving the ball to Chris Capuano for the second game of the three game series. Cappy is looking for his fourth win of 2012, and he leads the Dodger pitching staff in wins. Who would have thought that Cappy would have more wins than Kershaw at this point in the season, right?

Cappy is 3-0 this year with a 2.73 ERA and 29 whiffs in 29.2 innings pitched. That is a very impressive 8.8 whiff per nine rate. Cappy is 8-3 with a 3.65 ERA in his career against the Cubs. He will try and build on that success as he faces a team that has only hit .225 against him. No Cub has more than eight at-bats off of Capuano, and they are 9 for 40 collectively. Alfonso Soriano and former Dodger Blake DeWitt are the only Cubs to hit home runs off Cappy.

Capuano’s opposing starter will be right hander Chris Volstad. Originally Matt Garza was supposed to pitch today, but he was a late scratch because of the flu. Volstad had his slot pushed back to Sunday because of a rain-out, but with Garza falling ill, it returns Volstad back to his normal spot in the rotation. Volstad, who first came up with the Marlins, has had a rough start to the 2012 season. He is 0-3 with a 6.11 ERA. He has allowed 32 hits in 29 innings, and  he has given up over 10 hits per nine innings. In Volstad’s last start against Philadelphia, he allowed four runs through six, but didn’t allow any runs after the first inning. Over the years Volstad is 3-3 with a 4.46 ERA against the Dodgers. In turn the Dodgers are hitting .258 against Volstad. Bison is hitting .294 (5 for 17) with a home run and two RBI. James Loney is 5 for 17, and Jerry Hairston is 5 for 15 with a double.

The Dodgers need to win the final two games of the series in order to split the road trip. The Dodgers aren’t as good on the road this year, but the month of May is a very heavy home schedule for the Dodgers. So if we continue breaking even on the road and playing .700 ball at home, it’s the recipe for success is it not? After the Chicago series, the Dodgers come home to play 15 of their next 17 games at home. The Dodgers have never played particularly well at Wrigley Field, having a total 300-400 record in the windy city. Today’s affair is at 11:20 AM and is televised on Prime Ticket. Check in with us after the game for our postgame recap. Losing to the Cubs is really embarrassing, so can we please stop doing it? Ok guys? Thanks. Go Blue.
