Every spring a hopeful group of has been vets and young unproven prospects are invited to camp to attempt to earn a spot on the roster. Tuesday the Dodgers announced the first 15 non-roster invites, and the collection of names look pretty underwhelming. Most of them have a smattering of big league experience.
Catcher Josh Bard
Outfielder Cory Sullivan
Wilfredo Ledezma may have a chance to make the 40 man roster if Hong-Chih Kuo is not signed. He is 30-year old lefty.
Angel Guzman was out of the Cubs organization. In 88 games he has a 4.82 ERA and a 3-10 record. He had a serious shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, and was unable to pitch in 2010 but came back to play in the minors last season.
Josh Bard, a switch hitter, hit .210/.256/.333 in 2011 in 86 plate appearances with the Seattle Mariners, but spent the bulk of the year in AAA Tacoma, hitting .301/.359/.507 with 18 doubles.
Cory Sullivan, a left-handed centerfielder and pinch hitter, has six years of big league experience. He has played with the Rockies, Mets, and Astros, but spent last season in AAA for the Phillies where he only hit .210.
35-year old Alberto Castillo, from Cuba, played in 17 games with the D-Backs last year and was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA.
Jeff Baisley, a third baseman and first baseman, has been in the minors for 7 seasons and briefly played in 14 games with the Athletics in 2008. Last season with the AAA Salt Lake Bees he hit .303 with 20 homeruns and 100 RBIs.
Lance Zawadzki, a switch hitting infielder, played in 20 games with the Padres in 2010. Luis Cruz, an infielder, played briefly in three seasons in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008-2009 and the Brewers in 2010. In 154 at bats he only had 34 hits and had a .221 batting average.
Shane Lindsay is an Australian pitcher who appeared in four games with the Chicago White Sox allowing 11 hits in 6 innings pitched. He was out righted to the minors and became a free agent.
The Dodgers have all but completed their 25-man roster for 2012 with the exception of the expected re-signing of Mike MacDougal. It will be unlikely that any of these non-roster invites will make the team, but hey you never know.
