First MLB Female Head Trainer to be Appointed by Dodgers

Sue Falsone will become the first female head trainer in MLB as well as the first in any of the top four professional sports leagues according to sources. The Dodgers are restructuring their medical team. Assistant Athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk, strength and conditioning coach Brendon Huttmann, and physical therapist Jeremiah Randall have all left to join the Pittsburgh Pirates. The current head trainer and director of medical services, Stan Conte, has been with the Dodgers for five years since leaving the San Francisco Giants. He will remain with the club and oversee the medical department.

Sue Falsone is 36 years old and a licensed physical therapist and athletic trainer. From 2008-2010 she became the first woman physical therapist in MLB while with the Dodgers. She received her physical therapy degree from Daeman College in Buffalo, New York and a Master’s Degree in human movement science with a concentration in sports medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She moved back to Arizona after the 2010 season where she used to work for Athletes’ Performance Institute for a 10-year stretch. She has been a consultant to the Dodgers since 2007 and currently holds the position of Vice President of Performance Physical Therapy and Team Sports at Athletes’ Performance Institute.

Falsone’s historic hiring is a refreshing moment for us female Dodger fans. Having a female break the gender barrier with this important position is exciting and may pave the way for more female presence in the sport.
